What is engagement rate

Engagement rate measures the share of your audience that reacts to a post. You add up likes, comments and shares, then divide by impressions or by your follower count. The result is a percentage. The higher it is, the more your content reaches the right people.

On LinkedIn and Instagram, a good benchmark sits around 2 to 5 percent. On X (Twitter), rates are naturally lower because engagement dilutes in a fast feed: 0.5 to 1 percent is already decent. Below those thresholds, the post goes unnoticed. The calculation on impressions reflects post quality; the calculation on followers reflects the health of your account.

As a freelance or creator, track your progress over time rather than chasing an absolute number: a rate that climbs matters more than a generic benchmark. Small accounts often beat big ones on percentage, because their followers are closer and more reactive.

Frequently asked questions

How is engagement rate calculated?

You add up likes, comments and shares, then divide by impressions or by followers, and multiply by 100 to get a percentage.

Should I calculate on impressions or on followers?

On impressions to judge the quality of a post. On followers to track the overall health of your account over time.

What is a good engagement rate on LinkedIn?

Around 2 to 5 percent is good. Above 5 percent is excellent. Below 1 percent the post needs reworking.

What is a good engagement rate on X (Twitter)?

On X rates are lower: 0.5 to 1 percent is decent, above 1 percent is very good. Engagement dilutes in a fast feed, so frequency matters as much as the rate.
